HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TURBO TRAINER

Your Turbo Trainer will let you get extremely fit during the winter, but you need to use it properly to get the very best out of every minute you spend training. It can be difficult to fit your training schedule around you other life pressures, the best way to achieve your goals is to make your training enjoyable. This guide will help you to do that.

1) SET GOALS

In every aspect of your life setting goals will help you achieve more. This is particularly true for fitness training and very true for Turbo Trainer use. The great thing about Turbo Trainers is that there are no external factors to worry about, no headwinds or traffic or hills or rough roads and that means you can set targets and reach them without other factors interfering. if you want to climb better, set a climbing program, for sprinting or high speed cruising you can do the same.

By using a Heart Rate Monitor you can really measure and watch your fitness improve with your training program

2) POSITION

It’s extremely important that your body position on the bike is perfect when using a Turbo Trainer, because you’ll be spending lots of time in the same position. Here’s a guide to setting up your bike, follow it to make sure you’ve got the right position for riding. Use bike gloves and proper bike shorts, a little talc on your crotch and bottom can stop soreness.

3) WARMING UP

When you cycle outside you unconsciously warm-up by starting pedalling slowly and gradually increasing, with Turbo Trainers there’s a tendency to jump on and pedal furiously straight away. Don’t do this, it makes your training less effective and you’re more likely to injure yourself. Warm up and cool down during the first and last 10 minutes of your workout, it’s easy to do just pedal more slowly.

4) DRINK LOTS OF WATER

Turbo Trainers make you sweat a lot, and without the cooling effect of the wind outdoors you can get very warm quickly. Drink at least one litre of water for every 30 minutes that you’re on the turbo.

5) DISTRACT YOURSELF

Find anyway you can to take your mind off the training; this is the best way to avoid boredom. here’s some suggestions.

  1. Listen to music
  2. Listen to an audiobook
  3. Watch TV
  4. Watch YouTube or BBC iPlayer
  5. Anything else you can think.
